| Dental hygienists specialise in teeth cleanings, so they play an important role in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. A healthy mouth not only helps you feel and look good, it contributes to your overall health too.
We think our hygienist is fantastic; she's had lots of experience and is passionate about what she does, and delights in helping patients achieve their hygiene goals.
We are sometimes asked by patients new to our practice whether they can just see our hygienist, Debbie, for a clean only. Unfortunately we are not allowed to. For the first visit to any dental practice it is a requirement by the Singapore Dental Council that a dentist examine the patient because the dentist has overall responsibility for your treatment. It is for this reason that when you are first seen at Smilefocus you must also see a dentist. Thereafter, and as agreed with your dentist, you can have cleanings with our hygienist without your dentist also having to conduct an exam.

Why a hygienist?
I know it may sound strange, but I love what I do! It is so rewarding to thoroughly clean someone’s teeth (very gently, of course), especially if the teeth have not been cleaned for a while, and to watch the gums get healthier. It’s fun to remove stain and tartar to find beautiful teeth underneath! It's all about helping people to look good and feel even better. Clean teeth and healthy gums really enhance your smile, give you better breath and since the mouth is the entry way into your body, it also increases your overall health. It’s especially rewarding when patients start smiling and laughing again without feeling self-conscious or worried about their teeth, gums or breath!
An interesting case
I had a patient who came to me because he could no longer see his teeth; many were completely covered with tartar. His teeth had been like that for some time, but the worse they got the more embarrassed he was to go to a dental clinic. His girlfriend was a patient of mine, so she was able to reassure him that I wouldn’t lecture him for staying away from a dentist or a dental clinic for so long! First, I congratulated him for coming in. Then I congratulated him again when we uncovered his teeth and they were beautiful, white and cavity free! It took a few cleaning visits to get his mouth into great shape again, but it was wonderful to see him leave the office after our first visit smiling with his head held high. He was so happy to be on the road to better health. (His girlfriend was very pleased too.)
